Komaba Research Campus Japanese Language Courses are offered by the Center
for Japanese Language Education at the University of Tokyo, primarily for
UTokyo international students and foreign researchers who wish to learn
Japanese while pursuing their academic and research activities.
The classes are held during the spring semester (April to July) and the
fall semester (October to January).
Currently, all classes are conducted online.
- Foreign researchers and faculty members affiliated with the University of Tokyo
- International Students enrolled at the University of Tokyo
- Spouses of those in categories 1 or 2 (*Spouses may enroll if there are
vacancies in the class.)

1) Take the Japanese Proficiency Level Check Test to decide your class level
and prepare the necessary documents listed below.
2) Fill out the registration form.

(1) Official student ID, staff ID card or Certificate of Enrollment issued
by UTokyo
(2) ID photo (4cm×3cm)
In addition to the above, foreign researchers and spouses must submit the
following documents.

・ Testament
*For (1) mentioned above, please submit a copy of the applicant's spouse's
ID card or Certificate of Enrollment issued by UTokyo.
- Applications will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis until the class becomes full.
- If fewer than five people sign up, the class will not be held.
- No application will be accepted after the application period.
- No application via e-mail will be accepted.
- It is also possible for a representative to apply on your behalf. Please make sure to provide them with all the information required to complete the online application, as well as the necessary documents.
- If your supervisor will not be available during the application period,
please try to obtain Letter of Request in advance. If this is not possible, with your supervisor’s permission,
you may submit a letter from a substitute professor (this must be a member
of the teaching staff, and not a secretary or member of the office staff).
