Japanese Language Courses on Komaba Research Campus

Komaba Research Campus Japanese Language Courses are offered by the Center for Japanese Language Education at the University of Tokyo, primarily for UTokyo international students and foreign researchers who wish to learn Japanese while pursuing their academic and research activities.
The classes are held during the spring semester (April to July) and the fall semester (October to January).
Currently, all classes are conducted online.


Eligible Applicants
  1. Foreign researchers and faculty members affiliated with the University of Tokyo
  2. International Students enrolled at the University of Tokyo
  3. Spouses of those in categories 1 or 2 (*Spouses may enroll if there are vacancies in the class.)


Classes

Class Description
Level 1
(Elementary)
To study and practice sentence patterns and vocabulary of lower elementary level
Level 2
(Upper-
Elementary)
*There will be no classes in the 2025 Spring Semester.
To study and practice sentence patterns and vocabulary of upper elementary level
Level pre3
(Elementary to Intermediate)
To enhance overall Japanese, including listening and reading comprehension for learners who have finished elementary textbooks.

*If you wish to take Level 2 or other classes, please visit the website of the Center for Japanese Language Education.

1) Take the Japanese Proficiency Level Check Test to decide your class level and prepare the necessary documents listed below.

please use APPLICANT'S FULL NAME as;

3. Letter of request from your host researcher (Researchers Only):

Necessary Documents to be upploaded for Application
●All applicants
(1) Copy of student/staff ID card or Certificate of Enrollment/Employment issued by UTokyo
(2) Passport-style photo (4 cm×3 cm)

In addition to the above, foreign researchers and spouses must submit the following documents.

・ Letter of Request from Host Researcher (with signature or seal)

Spouses Only
・ Testament
*For (1) mentioned above, please submit a copy of the applicant's spouse's ID card or Certificate of Enrollment issued by UTokyo.

Note

  • Applications will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis until the class becomes full.
  • If fewer than five people sign up, the class will not be held.
  • No application will be accepted after the application period.
  • No application via e-mail will be accepted.
  • It is also possible for a representative to apply on your behalf. Please make sure to provide them with all the information required to complete the online application, as well as the necessary documents.
  • If your supervisor will not be available during the application period, please try to obtain Letter of Request in advance. If this is not possible, with your supervisor’s permission, you may submit a letter from a substitute professor (this must be a member of the teaching staff, and not a secretary or member of the office staff).
